Race Director's Messages

4/9/07

Dear NJM, LBH and Relay Participants,

Let me first thank each and everyone of you for supporting the 11th annual NJM Weekend. It is very gratifying to our all volunteer organization to know that this year’s event will be by far, our largest ever. Each of the three major events is, at this time, well over last year's record totals. Currently we are expecting 4,000+ for the Long Branch Half Marathon, 2,000+ for the New Jersey Marathon and 100 teams for the Gold's Gym Marathon Relay coming in from 47 states, 10 countries and well over 300 different NJ towns.

With under 4 weeks remaining and, for most of you, the last of your longest training runs approaching, it is time to print a copy of the "Hot Sheet". These two pages have all of the latest info that will hopefully help make your NJM/LBH/Relay experience a good one.

Please keep in mind that there will be an estimated 4,000 vehicles arriving in the immediate area on NJM Sunday between 5:00am and 7:00am. Even though we do have sufficient parking for all, it is not in one parking lot. All of the parking facilities are an easy walk to the Start/Finish Area and the host hotel. Please refer to the Parking Directions page and Parking Map posted on our NJM website.

Also, if you are using street parking, please take note of the name of the street. This will help you after the event to relocate your vehicle and or get assistance.

Finally, please bring your gear bags inside the hotel for safe keeping before you go outside to the starting line. Please securely attach the Gear Tag part of your Bib # to your bag of warm sweats and drop it off in the Atlantic Ballroom of the hotel. Our volunteers will be there to assist.

On behalf of the more than 1,000 volunteers, the City of Long Branch, Borough of Monmouth Beach, our sponsors and, especially our many children’s charities, we wish you all the best for your last weeks of training.

We are all looking forward to another memorable day on April 29 at the Jersey Shore!

Running regards,
Art Castellano, Director-NJM
President-NJRRC

PS: Please save the date for our 12th annual NJM Weekend, May 2, 3 and 4, 2008. The first weekend in May will be our new home and we will be the “kick-off” event for the “Worldwide” Hepatitis Awareness Month”!

Dear NJM, LBH and Relay Runners and Walkers,

Please accept this email letter as the first of several updates as we head into the last part of your training and, hopefully, the best part of your training now that the days grow longer and the temps get milder!

Thanks to your participation we are expecting a record turnout for each of the three NJM Sunday events. At this time we are expecting 2000+ for the NJM. 4000+ for the LBH and 100 teams for the Gold’s Gym Relay.

We are also expecting participants from 45+ states and 15 other countries.

Due to the much larger field we are putting the following into action:

  1. Expanding the size of each of the first three Fluid Stations with PODS-The Official Storage Sponsor of the NJM supplying us with storage units at each of the Fluid Stations. If you see the POD you’ll know the Fluid Station is near! Gatorade (lemon-lime Endurance Formula) is the official sports drink and will always be first at each Fluid Station.

  2. Increasing the numbers of Porto-John’s both on the course and at the Start/Finish area.

  3. Doubling the Gu-energy gel (MMM Chocolate and Vanilla Bean) and other provisions on the course. As always, use the energy gel you train with and do not experiment on Marathon Sunday.

  4. Will have a Marathon morning parking plan (with map) both on our website and at the Expo for all of the preferred locations and directions.

For the first time each pre-registered (by mid March) will receive a personalized Bib with your first name imprinted above the number.

Also, please go to: http://www.njmarathon.org/webmaster/saturdayevents.htm and check out the Saturday morning events devoted to kids of all ages. Thanks to our partners: Interfaith Hospitality Network and SUDC (Sudden Unexplained Death in Children), Saturday morning becomes a fun time with Kids’ Races for the Homeless, the Family Marathon Celebration Run and the 3-Mile Breakfast Fun Run/Walk sponsored by the Ocean Place Resort & Spa.

Speaking for all of our sponsors, the City of Long Branch, Borough of Monmouth Beach, our all-volunteer Marathon Staff and nearly 1,000 volunteers on Marathon Sunday, we all wish you a healthy 50+ days of training.

Running regards,
Art Castellano, Director
