Major Jesse Arnstein, 37, is a member of the New Jersey Air National Guard and competes for the elite National Guard Marathon Team. Jesse competed in the New Jersey Marathon (previously named the Jersey Shore Marathon) 2001-2003, finishing in the top 10 each year. His best placing was 4th in 2002. Jesse ran his first marathon in 1993 and has completed 13 marathons.  Jesse plans to run close to a 6:25 per mile pace for the first half of the marathon and then pick it up slightly for a strong finish. Expect a touch of military motivation. Huah!  You can spot Jesse on the course by looking for the "2:50 pacer" sign, or by his black and white "National Guard" singlet.

On July 8, 2002 I woke up like any other Monday morning. As I got out of the shower I decided to get on the scale and weigh myself. I weighed in at 292 pounds. It was at that point I decide something had to change. I need to loose weight. I had a simple idea. Eat better and exercise. I packed a bag that Monday morning that included a pair of shorts, t-shirt, and tennis shoes. I had access to a treadmill at work and that seemed to be the logical choice. That Monday evening was tough. I walked 3 miles. It took me an hour. I also started to modify what I was eating. I assumed that by cutting the quantity of what I ate and trying to limit my fat intake would be a change I could live with. Every day I plugged away. I phased back my eating. I was not counting calories or points of any “diet” plan. I just tried to eat more fruits and vegetables and cut out fried or fatty foods. As I started to loose weight I came to the conclusion that if I burned 300 calories walking for an hour I could burn a lot more by running. So slowly but surly I began to run. I was about 275 pounds at this point. I eventually could run 1 minute, 2 minuets, 1 mile, 2 miles and so the story goes. By December I had lost 70 lbs and running was getting easier. It is at this point I came up with the idea of running a marathon. I began to get more focused on my running at that point. The more I ran the more I enjoyed it. March was now here and I had lost 100 pounds and was now going to run my first 5K. I was so proud to finish that race without stopping. I was hooked. I have run a lot of races since then. I have run 9 Marathons (8 have been Boston qualifiers). I will be running Boston on April 16 (10th) and the New Jersey Marathon will be my 11th. I know the course well. I posted a personal best (2:52:27) at last years race. I have run with pace groups in the past and I know how valuable they can be. I am looking forward to helping you achieve your goal and qualify for Boston.

I am a 41 year old from Johnson City, TN and have been running marathons since 1999 (NJM will be my 38th).  About 15 years ago (early 90s), I weighed 240 pounds and had never run a race in my life.  My only memories of running at the time was "attempting" (and failing) in the early 80s to complete a mile in gym class in high school in less than 10 minutes.  It was ugly and if I survived that "run", I thought I would never run again...  Diet and various aerobic exercises in the mid 90s got me down to about 185 pounds and then picking up running as a means of stress relief from work around 1996 eventually got another 20 pounds off of me.  I joined our local State of Franklin Track Club and ran several 5 and 10 Ks in the late 90s.  I started to think about attempting a marathon in 1998 and when our local track club started up the Virginia Creeper Marathon in 1999, I decided to give it a try.  My first marathon went well, through 18 miles, and then I struggled to a 3:45 finish and a 25 minute positive split.  I was determined to run another Virginia Creeper Marathon in 2000 and to do it better than before.  When I did that, I got hooked on marathoning.  2007 will be my 9th consecutive Virginia Creeper Marathon.  I have completed Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Grandma's (Duluth, MN), Columbus (OH), Country Music (Nashville, TN), Rock 'n' Roll (Phoenix, AZ), Salt Lake City, Hartford, Mardi Gras, and many other smaller marathons.  With a marathon PR of 3:14, a 3:20 marathon might be a bit of a challenge if the weather doesn't cooperate, however, I have run a Boston qualifying time of between 3:17 and 3:20 in 6 different marathons in 6 different states in the last 2 years.  I have a long term goal of running a marathon in all 50 states and DC at a faster than 3:30 finish time and look forward to the NJM being # 23 of that quest.  I will be running a very even pace (1:40 for the first loop if there are half-marathoners with that goal that wish to join us).  Weekdays, I work for Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN in Environmental Affairs and spend most of my time resolving air permitting issues.  My favorite hobbies outside of marathon running are baseball (and other sports) and travel.  My girlfriend Sharon will be traveling with me from TN to run the Long Branch Half Marathon.  Please contact me at mailto:skerrick@eastman.com if you have any questions and I look forward to you joining our group on race day.

Ritchie Lavene – 33 years old. “Run to Live….Live to Sing”

I was born on a cool summer morning in a Chicago Hospital; the sun was just peaking over the….just kidding. As a passionate person not only in life but in running and all the activities that I participate in; I have run 7 Marathons since October 2005, 4 of which I was a pacer (New Jersey, Delaware, Richmond, Miami (with a dislocated shoulder!)) Number 8 will be Boston on April 16th, where I plan to run sub 3 hour.  I am very devoted and focused not only on my training but with finding joy with everything that I do and sharing those passions with others.

In addition to Running, I am very active in the Barbershop Harmony Society, directing a Barbershop Chorus, Singing in a Quartet, and judging and coaching groups all over the country! As a matter of fact the motto, “Run to Live…

.Live to Sing” is etched into my Road ID bracelet! I run to stay fit and satisfy my sports competitive edge. I also strive to set an example of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for my family and friends. I have a beautiful wife, Allison, and daughter, Ilana! (Happiness is a 3˝ year old who won’t let you stretch alone!)

You want to go over the line in 3:30 comfortably, you run with me!

Hello, my name is Gavasker. I live in Stamford, CT.  I
was a resident of New Jersey before moving down to
Connecticut. While I was in New Jersey I used to play
in the South Brunswick adult soccer League and
badminton club in Maplewood.

My first ever road race was a 5K in May 2003.  Since
then I ran many road races including 7 marathons and
at least a dozen half
marathons. My best time for a marathon is 3:23 from
Baltimore trail Marathon which I ran in 2006 and my
best half marathon time is 1:32.

I'm a software engineer by profession and work for a
reinsurance company in Greenwich, Connecticut. I enjoy
running whether it is a race or it is just a training
run.

I WISH YOU ALL THE VERY BEST FOR THE NJ MARATHON.

I've been running since high school. I was voted MVP my junior year and was captain of the track team my junior and senior year. I ran my first marathon while still in high school, against my coach's wish and ran it in 3:18 (unofficial). I miss qualifying for The Boston Marathon by 9 minutes, but will attempt again in 2007.

My long term goal in the marathon is to run Boston just once. Short term goal would be to break 3:15. I love running with a pack where we can feed off of each others energy and keep the spirits high. Good Luck! And I hope to see you out there.

A converted soccer player, I have enjoyed the transition to running over the past few years and have completed 20 marathons (including the 2005 New Jersey Marathon, and again in 2006 with the 4:15 pace team). I have also completed 6 ultramarathons, including NJRR Club’s Turkey Swamp 50K, and the JFK 50 miler. I am a member of the New York Flyers, and the New York Road Runners. Roy Blakeburn, of Virginia Beach, is 50 years old and is a retired Marine. My first marathon was the Marine Corps Marathon in 1983, in a 4:30:01. My PR is 3:28:59. I came back to running in 2001, since returning I have ran 9 marathons 7 in the past 2 years (4 Shamrocks 2 as a pacer, Frederick, Richmond, 2 Marine Corps and Jacksonville 06). The New Jersey Marathon will be my 15th Marathon. I enjoy running and listening to runners who are running their first marathon or trying to set a PR. I believe in conserving energy early in order to have enough leg to pass people at the 20 mile mark! I believe a common mistake most runners make in a marathon is going out too fast in the first 10 miles. I look forward to running with a great group of people, having fun, and finishing with a BIG smile. I am trying to run a marathon in all of the 50 States, 5 down and along way to go!

My name is Brian Buffaloe. I'm 56 years old and have been running marathons for about 20 years. I started my marathon odyssey at the New Jersey Marathon in Jersey City in 1985. Since then I have successfully completed 75 marathons and 1 ultra (60k-37 miles). My best marathon time is 3:14 (of course that was many years ago-smile). I have run marathons in such exotic places as Athens Greece, Anchorage Alaska, Walt Disney World, just to name a few. Although injuries have slowed my times and hampered my training, I still try to run in at least 3 marathons a year. This year I will be running the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach in March, the NJ Marathon in April, and NYC Marathon in Nov.

Whenever I'm asked what is my favorite marathon, I have to say that I don't really have one particular favorite. The NJ Marathon has a special place in my heart. NJ is my home state and the marathon course runs near the homes of my mother and brother and sisters. I have been running The NJ Marathon since its start in 1996. I was one of the original pacers. This year if I can overcome my knee injury, I will be pacing at 4:45. I've also have had the honor and privilege of singing the National Anthem at the start of every NJ Marathon. So if you don't see me at the starting line, look for the guy with the microphone in his hand. See you at the shore.

I am an active duty Navy man and I started running marathons 3 years ago when I transfered from a nuclear powered submarine to shore duty. I live in Virginia Beach, VA. I have completed 10 marathons. I even did the goofy challenge at Disney World this year, running the Half-Marathon, followed by the full marathon the next day. It was loads of fun! I have found that using my wrist GPS helps to keep a steady pace. I use it to keep me from starting out too fast too. My email is jengerz@msn.com. See you on race day!

I am a native New Yorker with a passion for marathoning.  I have paced over two dozen marathons (and 1/2 marathons) including hometown NY, Shamrock, NJ, Hartford, Flying Pig, Disney, San Diego, Columbus, Grandmas & Marine Corps.  I was part of the 2006 Clif Bar Pace team and a pacer for the New Balance Chicago Team.  I have also been part of both Active’s Team Aquaphor and Team Amino Vital.  This year I hope to add both cycling and swimming to my athletic resume but I believe the marathon will remain my true first love.  I look forward to sharing the miles with you!

I have been a member of the Essex Road Runners Club since moving to New Jersey in 1999. This will be my first New Jersey Marathon and 13th overall. At first I ran big city marathons such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh (my hometown) etc., but lately I've been concentrating of the more aesthetically pleasing ones such as Cap Code, Wineglass, Big Sur, and Mystic. I teach history at The Montclair Kimberley Academy and coach middle school cross-country. At 6' 1" I should be easy for my pace group to find.

This will be my 7th time running the New Jersey Marathon. I have completed 76 marathons, 26 ultras and 62 half-marathons. If I can do it, then anybody can. Often the hardest part is simply getting to the starting line. In 2006 I was the 6-hour pacer and my clock time was 5:58:15. I hope to be more accurate in 2007.

I started running in May 2002 because I was sick of being an obese, bad habit-collecting couch potato. Since then I've raced everything on the road from 5K to ultramarathons and every distance in triathlon. It is my honor to once again pace this year's NJ Marathon 6:30 group, which will be my 33rd marathon. While the half marathon is my favorite race, I also LOVE long distance: NJ will be my first marathon back after recently completing my goal of 30 marathons in 30 states in 365 days which included 23 marathons, 5 50Ks, a 50 miler, and an Ironman. I am a member of PA's AARC and NERRC, NYC's NYRRC, the Marathon Maniacs, and the 50 States/50 States & DC Marathon Clubs. I sometimes race for time, but more often than not I race for the experience. The back of the pack is often a real party, full of encouragement, laughs, and comraderie. I'm a native New Jerseyan (a resident for 24 years!) and spent my first 21 summers in Ocean County along the fabulous Atlantic. I'm really looking forward to pacing my team in my home state to a smile-wearing finish! Any questions, don't hesitate to email me.
